James Banner (b. 1991) is a musician and composer from Dudley, now based between Leeds and Berlin. His music has been supported by Initiative Musik, UdK/HfM Hanns Eisler Berlin, The Berlin State and Making Music. He studied jazz, performance and composition in Birmingham, Paris and Berlin, and now works as a performer of jazz and improvised music around Europe.
James regularly appears as a sideman, with his own group USINE, and co-curates a monthly series at Berlin’s Donau115. His unique instrumental voice means he is consistently in demand for a variety of projects, and collaborative practises, the desire to find a meaningful place in the music and focus on individuality in improvisation are at the forefront of his musical approach.
James is also a Lecturer at Leeds College of Music, and works as a workshop facilitator with Jazzlines (THSH Birmingham) and Make The Paint Dance (Leeds).
