Riffs Journal launch - special Ideas of Noise edition

To celebrate the launch of this special Ideas of Noise festival edition publication, Riffs and Ideas of Noise are running a series of activities at Surge in Spring III. From 5pm until 7pm, this pop-up event will include readings from the contributors to this issue, a live performance of improvised writing and music co-production, and the screening of several video and compositional pieces including work from Nic Pillai, Mike Fletcher, Tom Pierard, Sherrie Edgar and Gustav Thomas.

Riffs is an Open Access online (and limited edition) print journal that provides a space for experimental writing about popular music. It is run by staff and students at Birmingham City University and funded by the Birmingham Centre for Media and Cultural Research (BCMCR).

Surge in Spring - Ideas of Noise presents Crèche and Burn

Midlands Arts Centre, Cannon Hill Park, Birmingham

Join Ideas of Noise for two hours of family friendly creative sound making in this drop in session from 2-4pm at the MAC as part of Sid Peacock's Surge in Spring festival. Kids old and young can experiment with electronic instruments made by Joe Wright, create graphic scores and explore experimental music making. Instruments will be provided but feel free to bring your own if you’d like! Workshop is free and suitable for all ages, children must be accompanied by an adult.

Ideas of Noise Thinking/Not Thinking

Centrala, Fazeley Street, Brimingham

Ideas of Nose is pleased to be curating a lunch time event as part of new festival 'Thinking/Not Thinking'. Ideas of Noise veterans Soesen Edan and Rosa Francesca will each perform. Come be bathed in tibetan bowls and gongs by Soesen at 12pm, followed by a performacne and Q&A from Rosa at 1.00pm exploring new facial recognition based sound generating software

Tickets are free but reservations are advised.

Thinking/Not Thinking Fest is an annual festival of contrasts, curveballs and juxtapositions. Currently settled into it's new home of Birmingham, the festival explores clashes with genres and has previously put representatives from the worlds of metal, sonic arts, post-punk, jazz, hardcore, noise, contemporary composition, math-rock and free improv in a way that functions as it's own cohesive entity.

This years edition takes place at Centrala during 12-14 April and sees many well-regarded West Midland faces performing alongside musicians from Ireland and Netherlands.

Ideas of Noise curates Fizzle at the MAC

Hexagon Theatre, MAC, Cannon Hill Park, Birmingham

Ideas of Noise are really pleased to re-present two festival highlights Angharrad Davies and Xhosa Cole as guest curators in this Fizzle/TDE promotions event. Angharrad will present a solo set for violin, and Xhosa Cole will perform his Greek Suite, which was commissioned for Ideas of Noise 2018, for flute and string quartet.
